An organic  healthy diet is finally an accepted and popular diet with many. As well, going green is an ancient regime and equally the best way to lose weight. Plus it’s an excellent way to conserve renewable energy and preserve our planet.

What you eat has a serious impact on renewable energy. According to Cornell University researchers, Americans only  need to make small changes in order to reduce around 50 percent of our energy consumption used by our food system:

  • Start eating a healthy diet
  • Reduce your calorie intake
  • Return to traditional farming

It is estimated that the US uses 19 percent of total energy in the production and supply of our food. The supply and production waste mostly comes from non-renewable energy sources. These resource are quickly depleting.  In order to help save our ecosystem we must find ways to reduce fuel consumption and return to sustainable ways of growing food and eating an organic diet.

Equally, what we eat affects our health. A green healthy diet is the best way to prevent countless diseases such as diabetes, heart problems, obesity, genetic disorders, tumors, cancer and many other maladies.  An organic healthy diet can also help you lose weight. Here are several health benefits and tips to help you achieve a healthier and “greener” lifestyle.

Toxic Diets vs. Organic Healthy Diets

Today most of your food contains toxic life-taking properties. In fact, the  majority of your food cause numerous diseases. In truth, it has been proven that the average American diet will  affect the health of many generations to come.

Much of your food contains preservatives, additives, cancer causing byproducts, hormones, chemicals and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The health consequences of eating such polluting foods are devastating.

However, organically grown foods do not have chemicals, hormones and GMOs. A healthy diet is the only solution. As well, organic foods have not been subjected to pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Organic animal products such as fish, poultry, dairy and eggs are free of antibiotics and growth hormones. Conclusively, an organic healthy diet is definitely the best way to prevent disease and lose weight.

Besides, organic food is much higher in nutrition and cancer-fighting agents compared to your “conventional” grown foods. An article by the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry states:

  • Fruits and vegetables grown organically show significant higher amounts of cancer-fighting antioxidants than “modern” grown foods
  •  Strawberries, corn and Marion berries suggests that herbicides and pesticides actually hinder the production of phenolic (a natural plant chemical) which acts as a plant’s natural defense
  • Phenolic or phenol is also known to have many health properties like cancer chemo-preventives, antioxidants, longevity and anti-aging

Organic farming aims toward being sustainable without depleting resources and is generally focused on renewable energy. Equally, an organic healthy diet is a much better choice for your well-being and to help you maintain your weight.

Preservatives, Additives & Chemicals Affect Your Health

Besides the many side effects of preservatives, chemical and additives, they can cause you to gain weight. If you want to lose weight, a healthy diet is your best solution.

  • Preservatives usually contain trans and saturated fats. Diets high in trans fats have been linked to various health issues including obesity and heart problems. Preservatives like sulphite, nitrite and benzoate can cause intestinal problems by slowing down or stopping natural digestion. These chemical can cause irritable bowel syndrome, lack of nutrient assimilation, build-up of toxins and stored excess fat.
  • Additives like high fructose corn syrup are used in many commercial products to heighten flavor. If your diet contains high fructose corn syrup it is hard for your body to break down. In effect, you gain weight and possible health issues.
  • Corn is one of the leading GMO products. If you are eating GMO corn it  can lead  to bloating and unhealthy buildup of bacteria thus weight gain. Phthalates are additives (a type of plastic softener) that mirror estrogen production causing lean muscle to be repressed and fat storage to be encouraged.
  • The dairy you are consuming  contains additives like antibiotics and hormones which can cause an imbalance in your digestive systems.
  • Chemicals are harmful to your health and cannot be processed by the body. Chemicals usually accumulate in your body as fat.
  • Chemicals mess with the hormones that regulate your metabolism. Certain chemicals like Bisphenol A or BPA (plastics) have been linked to thyroid problems and obesity.

To avoid harmful chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics, hormones and GMOs you should eat an organic healthy diet.   To maintain a healthy diet and lose weight it is recommended that you get rid of ALL conventionally grown products. Here are some tips:

  • Look for labels that say “Certified Organic”
  • Many organic foods in America are labeled USDA Organic
  • Organic products can be found in most local grocery markets
  • Choose products that have the Non-GMO Project Verified Seal
  • Look for the Oregon Tilthe label, organic standards are very rigid
  • Select Fair Trade products, they utilize renewable energy and encourage organic certification
  • Look for Fair Trade companies to ensure a fair wage and products are not made by inhumane practices
  • Look for the Non-GMO Project Verified Seal, standards are high to ensure that the product is organic

Not to Green: Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

GMO Orange

A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose genetic material has been modified using genetic engineering methods by using DNA molecules from different sources which are combined into one molecule to create a new set of genes.  In 2003, countries that grew 99 % of the global GMO crops were the United States (63 %), Argentina (21 %), Canada (6 %), Brazil (4 %), China (4 %), and South Africa (1 %).

According to the Grocery Manufacturers of America approximately 75 % of all processed foods in the U.S. contain a GM ingredient. Today, according to Sustainable Table, about 200 million acres of farmland worldwide are now used to grow GMO crops. Soybeans are the most common, demonstrating 63% of all GE crops in total, corn is 19 percent; cotton is 13 percent and canola 5 percent.

The ingredients  in your food either contains soy or corn. Not a healthy diet choice. Seeds have also been genetically modified such as tomatoes, alfalfa, potatoes, rice, squash, papaya, flax and chicory. The list is almost endless. Furthermore, animals have also been modified for the human diet. There are chickens capable of laying eggs that contain cancer fighting protein, non-browning apples that produce enzyme polyphenol oxidase, enviro-pigs that are modified to produce 65 percent less phosphorous in their poop and urine, fast growing salmon and hyper-producing seeds. Need I say more. It is time to gain control of a healthy diet.

Unhealthy Diet GMO Risks

Know What You Eat

According to a July 2002 article by Professor David Schubert, with GMO there is no a priori way of predicting the outcome of their production. The cell biologist states “the potential consequence of all of these perturbations could be the production of biomolecules that are either toxic or carcinogenic.” In Professor Schubert’s article he further states that “GM food is not a safe alternative in the diet.”

Many experts agree that genetic engineering is imprecise and highly capable of inducing mutation.  All genetic engineering processes lead to unpredictable changes in your DNA, your proteins and your biochemical structure. This can lead to allergenic and/or unexpected toxic effects. GMO diets have been linked to thousands of toxic and allergenic reactions, millions of sterile, diseased, and dead livestock, plus damage to practically every system and organ studied in laboratory animals.

GMO products have had foreign genes forced into their DNA. The implanted gene is typically a virus or bacteria.  Ever wonder why there are so many new viruses out there compared to 10 years ago. This is only in theory, but is is very possible. Again, not a healthy diet.

All GMOs are extremely unstable. Unfortunately we do not know the full extent of damage done to the environment and our renewable energy. Nor do we know the overall health consequences. To ensure that you have a safe and healthy diet look for GMO-free products labeled “non-GMO”. Please.

Foods labeled “Natural” or “Healthy”

Free Range Chickens

Always read your labels very carefully. Just because it states that it is natural or healthy does not mean that it is organic or GMO-free. Prime examples are eggs labeled “free-range chickens”. Regulations say that a free-range chicken only needs to be outside for 5 minutes a day. The chickens can spend the rest of the day restrained in tiny small cages and still be labeled free range.

Natural and healthy labels do not guarantee that the product you are buying is organic. As well,  there is no assurance that it is GMO-free. Always look for certification. Read your labels thoroughly so you can keep a safe and  healthy diet.

After a while you will get to know what companies have high quality products. But even then, companies change. So it doesn’t hurt to check the labels of the tried and true healthy diet products every so often.

Lose Weight, Stay Healthy and Help the Environment

More GMO Food

According to Cornell University researchers, if everyone in the United States returned to traditional farming, ate a healthy diet and reduced calorie intake, our energy consumption would be lowered by 50 percent. Below are some guidelines to help reduce food energy costs and lose weight:

  • Eat an Organic Diet: Conventional farming techniques are energy-demanding, disease promoting and encourage obesity. Organic farming improves renewable energy  by not using pesticides, by using more manure and utilizing crop rotations
  • Buy Locally: The cost of shipping food is extremely high. In fact, food travels an average of 1,491 miles in the United States before it is consumed. Buying locally significantly reduces costs and your ecological footprint
  • Eat Less: The average American consumes 3,747 calories daily which is 1,200 to 1,500 over recommendations. The American diet is typically high in processed foods and animal products. These “non-green” foods are high in calories and environmentally draining. Eating less and buying “green” food will improve your health, have a huge impact on fuel consumption and help you lose weight.
  • Reuse Paper and Plastic Grocery Bags: Reusing grocery bags reduces the number of plastic or paper bags that are produced and increases renewable energy. Furthermore, grocery bags are generally thrown away and add to our massive landfills. Either recycle or buy a reusable grocery bag which can be purchased at most place you shop.

Go Green and Filter Your Own Water

Tap Water Can Be Harmful

To ensure a healthy diet; reduce chemical consumption by filtering your own water. Also, plastic bottles take quite a lot of resources to produce. Plastic bottles are not cost effective for renewable energy. Just keep in mind that your tap water may contain harmful bacteria plus several chemicals that are routinely added:

  • Liquified chlorine
  • Fluorosilicic acid
  • Calcium hydroxide
  • Aluminium sulphate
  • Sodium silicofluoride

Tap water is also treated with chemicals in order to kill bacteria. Your water can also have many harmful toxins like pesticides, herbicides, lethal metals and hormones. A small list of harmful chemicals in your water may include:

  • water bottleLead
  • Copper
  • Radium
  • Arsenic
  • Nitrates
  • Chlorine
  • Mercury
  • Pesticides
  • Cadmium
  • Hormones
  • Aluminum
  • Barium Sulfate
  • Fluoride Compounds
  • Trihalomethane (THM)

 Different Chemicals in Plastic

Types Of Plastic

Furthermore, plastic bottles can leach chemicals into your water.  The #1 type plastic bottle is the most common water bottle. It is also labeled Polyethyl Tetra Ethelene (PETE). Never refill this bottle because the chemical bond breaks down with re-use and transmits Bisphenol A (BPA) into the liquid.  The #3, 6 and 7 are also harmful and can leak chemicals into your water, they contain:

  • #3 Polyvinyl chloride (vinyl or PVC); usually not recyclable
  • #6 Polystyrene
  • #7 Polycarbonate

In clinical studies BPA has been linked to breast and uterine cancer, insulin resistance, Type 2 Diabetes, endocrine dysfunction and decreased testosterone levels in men.

When storing water it is best to store it in a glass container and avoid sunlight. If needed, there are safe plastics that are made of polypropylene or polyethylene. Below are the types of water bottles that are safe to use:

  • #2 High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
  • #4 Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
  • #5 Polypropylene
